Photo Route 101
Top tips to look π₯π₯π₯ on your shoot!
1. Layer your outfits
Our photo routes are an exciting combination of different locations with a constant theme! Get maximum value from your shoot with as many different looks as conveniently possible.
The most convenient way to give you several looks without entire outfit swaps mid-shoot is to preplan how the different layers of your outfit interact and what combinations are possible!
2. Drink water π¦
In the days leading up to the shoot, keep drinking water and your skin & lips will thank you for it! Let the camera pick up your natural glow β€οΈ
Side tip: bring a bottle with you on the shoot! We're walking for a few hours and you're bound to need a drink π
3. Accessorise, accessorise and accessorise π
So much more than just a fashion statement, details are for the storyteller and accessories are the perfect visual stimulation to tell yours.
Do you have any items that carry extra meaning for you? Let us know and we'll make sure to bring them into our camera's focus.
4. Lift your chin
We all have different facial structures but any definition that can enhance your jawline is useful! This easy tip may seem unnatural at first but on a 2D image, it flatters the shape of your face and brings separation from your neck.
5. Bring comfortable footwear π
Photo routes are more enjoyable when you can enjoy the walking experience! Make sure you have something that's broken in and comfortable standing in for multiple hours ... or at least bring along trainers to switch between locations.
6. Avoid tinted eyeglasses π
Eyes are central to any good portrait shot so if you have glasses that tint, consider alternatives (such as contacts).
Sunglasses, however, could look good in a few shots if styled well and clear aviators look especially great on our neon routes and the reflections only add to the neon vibes β¨
7. Complement but don't match outfits π
If you're with a group, you don't want one person dressed in a vivid, light colour when everyone else is dressed in pastels - they'd stick out. But going too far the other way and matching perfectly could look bland.
Picking an effective and simple colour theory like the monochromatic scheme above could mean you're onto a winner. Other colour theories include complementary and analogous colours which we would highly recommend briefly Googling.
8. Arrive on time β
We'll often spend the first portion of the shoot grabbing a coffee β and having a relaxed chat. Whilst it's not allocated for shooting time, it's important to loosen up before your shoot and have a few minutes to catch your breath after your journey in.
9. Get a good night's sleep the week prior
Tiredness accumulates and one good night of sleep won't make up for a bad week. You'll look at your best with the most rest you can get π΄
10. Avoid π· alcohol the night before
Alcohol makes you look tired and gives you bloodshot, sensitive eyes ποΈ
11. Pack light π
We totally recommend bringing a bag containing quick outfit switches, a water bottle and any products you may need for touch-ups.
Keep it packed lightly, however, as you will be carrying it during the walk and placing it down (off-camera) while you're in the frame. Some people like to share the experience with friends who, on top of being functional, can help to gas you up.
12. Use a makeup & skincare routine that you trust
Switching up your π makeup or skincare routine for something you've never tried before is never a good idea. You won't know how your skin will react to different products and whether the look is the most flattering for you.
Whatever you choose, make sure you've tried it and you're comfortable with it.
13. Book a consultation ASAP
We offer free virtual consultations π» for anybody at any stage of their photoshoot process with personalised guidance to get you comfortable looking at your best! Don't hesitate to book your first consultation early, you can always supplement it with more closer to the shoot date!
